Samantha R. Romano focuses on providing a thorough and thoughtful approach to her defense of healthcare providers, healthcare systems, and long-term care facilities in medical malpractice and civil rights cases filed throughout state and federal courts in Virginia. She also counsels medical practitioners in investigations conducted by Virginia’s licensing boards, including the Board of Medicine, Board of Nursing, and Board of Counseling.

Prior to joining Byrne Canaan Law, Sam represented individual and corporate clients in an array of civil litigation, including cases involving constitutional and regulatory issues; medical malpractice and negligence; employment issues; 42 U.S.C. § 1983 claims; premises and products liability; and contract and business disputes in state and federal courts throughout Virginia.

Sam also brings a wealth of knowledge from her two-year judicial clerkship for The Honorable James A. Willett (Ret.) and The Honorable Carroll A. Weimer, Jr. of the Prince William County Circuit Court. She worked on both civil and criminal matters, preparing bench memos for motions dockets, complex discretionary hearings, and bench trials for her Judges as well as drafting court-issued orders and reviewing all proposed orders submitted to the Court.

Sam’s passion for pro bono work began in law school and she continues to utilize that passion to serve the local community. She regularly takes on pro bono no-fault divorce clients, and clients seeking to expunge charges from their criminal record. Sam also enjoys working with pro bono clients to complete stepparent adoptions and name changes; and volunteering with Equality Virginia’s Name & Gender Marker Change Clinic, and VCU’s Medical-Legal Partnership.
