Byrne Canaan Law is a Richmond-based health care defense firm built on a simple idea: that health care professionals facing legal challenges deserve a defense team whose entire focus is this work. Since our founding in 2019, we have grown into one of Virginia’s premier health care defense practices, with a team of experienced trial attorneys, associates, and dedicated support staff handling medical malpractice litigation and health regulatory board matters across the Commonwealth.
Our work is challenging, high-stakes, and deeply rewarding. We defend doctors, nurses, and other health care providers whose careers, reputations, and livelihoods are on the line. Every member of our team plays a direct role in that mission, and there is real satisfaction in helping people who have dedicated their lives to patient care navigate some of the most difficult moments of their professional lives.
We are intentional about culture. We work hard, hold ourselves to high standards, and invest in the professional development and mentorship of every person on our team. We also believe the best work comes from a team that brings different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences to the table. Byrne Canaan Law is committed to maintaining a workplace where every member of our team is valued, respected, and supported in building a meaningful career.
If you are looking for work that matters, with colleagues who care about doing it well and treating each other well in the process, we welcome the opportunity to talk with you.
Our team continues to grow to meet the needs of our clients across Virginia, and we are always looking to connect with talented professionals at every stage of their careers. We are particularly interested in hearing from entry-level and experienced attorneys in the following areas:
We are looking for lateral attorneys with relevant civil litigation experience to join our medical malpractice defense practice. This is the core of our firm’s work: defending physicians, surgeons, nurses, dentists, and other health care providers in high-exposure malpractice litigation across Virginia’s state and federal courts. Our attorneys handle cases from initial investigation through trial and appeal, working closely with clients, insurance carriers, and expert witnesses to build strong defenses.
Health care interest and experience are a plus but not required. We are equally interested in strong civil litigators who want to develop deep expertise in this specialized and rewarding area of practice.
Compensation
Salary is competitive and negotiable commensurate with experience. Bonus opportunities are available based on productivity, business origination, and work quality. Flexible remote work options are available.

We are seeking a Virginia-licensed attorney with experience in regulatory or administrative law to join our health care administrative practice. Strong partnerships with qualified health care professionals are essential to our work. In many of the cases we handle, we rely on independent experts to provide objective analysis, review medical records and clinical decision-making, share candid opinions, and, when appropriate, support the defense through testimony at deposition or trial.
We are always looking to build relationships with physicians, surgeons, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and other health care professionals across all specialties who are willing to serve as consulting or testifying expert witnesses on a case-by-case basis. We value professionals who bring strong clinical credentials, relevant hands-on experience, intellectual honesty, and the ability to communicate complex medical concepts clearly and persuasively. Prior expert witness experience is welcome but not required.
Our approach to expert engagement is straightforward. We are looking for accomplished clinicians who can review the facts of a case objectively, offer their honest professional opinions, and help us and our clients understand the medicine. We believe the best outcomes come from working with experts who call it as they see it and who are willing to stand up to defend good medicine.
If you are a health care professional interested in consulting or expert witness opportunities, we welcome you to contact us. Please include a brief description of your clinical background and areas of expertise, a CV, and fee schedule.
